CPL National Final 2017

Champions Poker League, the UK's #1 Pub Poker League
The setting was the Genting Sheffield Casino where 138 Champions Poker League Players would be vying to take their share of the £10,000 prize fund. All of the contenders had earnt their place at the National Final over the previous 12 months by qualifying through Quarterly finals around the country or finishing highest in the National Leaderboard – either way these were CPL’s best of the best!

With the £10,000 cash prize fund everyone seemed in good spirits from the outset and with Genting Casino being such a great venue, it was clear it would be a great weekend’s poker!

After 2 days of play, it was Steve ‘The Beast’ Davies from the Oakfield Hotel in Cwmbran who successfully lifted the trophy, along with winning £3,240 and becoming the Champions Poker League National Final Champion 2017!

Final placings for all signed out players and the pictures taken on the day can be found here.

Read on below for further details of the weekend’s action…..

Players started arriving from around 10am and by 1pm we had everyone seated and ready to go. After a few quick announcements we kicked off and it was quickly down to the serious business of playing poker!

After listening to player feedback CPL had increased the initial chip stack to 15,000 and upped the re-buy or add-on to 10,000. With the blinds starting at 25/50 and with 4 x ½ hour levels, this gave everyone time to settle in and play a slow game. Unfortunately this didn’t stop Jason Lomax from the Crocodile in London getting over excited with his poker and being first out of the tournament. Jason is the TD at the venue and also helps organise the Quarterly finals at Aspers Casino – better luck next time Jason!

During the afternoon we had a Royal Flush! Congratulations to Beverly Cooper from the Emporium in Fleet who managed to take a down a pot with this winning hand.

Play continued and after the lunch break we had a quick succession of players busting out of the tournament, until we reached the final 80 players who would be invited back to continue the tournament the following day. Everyone counted their chips and bagged them up ready for the next day’s play.

Day 2
The start of day 2 saw the casino randomly re-seat everyone but table 5 had a couple of players worth noting. Shaun Crowley of the Warwick Arms in Bristol was on this table and he had the largest chip stack of 142,800. John Brei-Crawley was the lowest chip stack with 4100 but unfortunately he was drawn onto table 5 as well! With the blinds being at 1000/2000 John held on for a few hands but eventually had to push ‘all in’ when then blinds reached him, but unfortunately he didn’t hit anything.

We eventually got down to the final 15 players who were in the money:

15th – Jake Eadie from the Ball Room in Perth winning £150
14th – Martin Branscombe Old Crown in Surrey winning £160
13th – Vadim Gercev from the Birds in Spalding winning £170
12th – Phil Sheridan from Club Llanrwst in North Wales winning £180
11th – Derek George from the Oakfield Hotel in Cwmbran winning £190

Once we got to the final ten players, we had a short break and then everyone took their seats for the final table. The finishing positions were as follows:

10th – Sam Lambert from the Market House Inn in Devon winning £200
9th – Jim Sherriffs from the Sportsmans Rest in Milton Keynes ¬¬winning £240
8th – Richard Harris from various pubs around Farnborough winning £300
7th – Steve Garrett from the True Briton in Birmingham winning £370
6th – Anthony Griffiths from the Rose n Bowl in Bacup winning £500
5th – Fred Lawson from various pubs around Perth winning £600
4th – Marcel Cunnington from the White Horse in Market Deeping winning £900
3rd – Gareth Tate from the Queens Hotel in Morley winning £1,600
2nd – Gideon Sedgwick from the George Abbott in Surrey winning £1,600
1st – Steve Davies from the Oakfield Hotel in Cwmbran winning £3,240

With the head to head between Steve and Gideon the final hand came after both players went ‘all in’ with Steve chasing a straight and Gideon having a pair of 10’s. The straight was dealt on the board and with Steve having Gideon’s chip stack covered, he was pronounced the worthy winner!

Well done to Steve for taking first place and securing the £3,240 prize fund and congratulations to the top 15 players for making it into a cash position. Thanks to everyone for making it a fantastic weekend and also to the casino and their staff. We look forward to hopefully seeing most of you at next year’s Champions Poker League National Final.

We will be inviting ALL the FINAL table players back next year to the National Final in 2018 to try to defend their positions!
