Rise of the Champions

With pub poker continuing to defy the recession, GOM hooked up with league heavyweights Champions Poker League to get the latest on their rapidly expanding operation.

It’s been a year of rapid change for pub poker leagues so far in 2009, but no amateur competition has witnessed an overhaul quite as swift and complete as that of the Champions Poker League.

The pub poker giants, who now operate in over 250 venues across the length and breadth of the UK, kicked off the year by announcing a brand new partnership with British betting giants William Hill, and their successful marriage achieved fruition this month with CPL holding their first ever William Hill Poker Club freeroll.

The event attracted a 192-runner field that battled it out over three hours of fiercely-contested poker to earn their share of the $500 prize pool, which served as a fitting curtain raiser to celebrate the launch of CPL’s new online league. Hosted on Hill’s poker client, the new league will give CPL players a further chance to qualify for the quarterly and national finals, win cash prizes every week and offer an exclusive GUKPT Main Event seat for one lucky winner.

However, while all this new-fangled online wizardry is awfully exciting, it certainly doesn’t seem to have distracted CPL regulars from attending their local pubs to duke it out in the live league. With new venues signing up every month, the league’s never been more competitive—and with a potential yearly prize pool of over £1.5 million, it’s not hard to see why.

At press time, it’s Colin “Gekko” Lee who sits proudly atop the national leaderboard, but he’ll have to show nerves of steel to maintain his lofty position with perennial CPL table-topper Peter “Frank Chickens” Bibbings breathing down his neck in second place, having played eight games fewer. Whatever the outcome, it promises to be an exciting run-in for top spot in the coming weeks.

Stepping back into the virtual world once more, CPL have also finished a complete renovation of their website and the new-look league hub is getting rave reviews from newcomers as well as existing members. The refurbished site now boasts enhanced venue profiles and an expanded medal board system, but perhaps the most innovative new addition is the head-to-head player comparison feature.

League members are now able enter their name and that of any rival player into the CPL database, and the new head-to-head tool will instantly bring up all of their league stats, highlighting which player has won in each category and ultimately declaring an overall winner—perfect for settling those last-orders debates between you and your mates over who is the venue king.
